Introducing New Chair Becky Leisch & Making Waves In 2013

I would like to take a moment to introduce myself as the new Wisconsin Surfrider Great Lakes Chair after taking over at the end of 2012.  My name is Becky Leisch and I have been part of the chapter for over two wonderful years.

I am very excited and honored to have taken on the new role as Chair for such a great organization. As an adventure seeker and outdoor enthusiast it is a great feeling being able to help instill a love for the environment in others. It is very rewarding having the opportunity to share my passion for surfing and stand up paddling through protecting Wisconsin’s waterways and Great Lakes. I look forward to what 2013 will bring with many new events, campaigns and programs.

New for 2013

  • BYOB Bring Your Own Bag Racine | Bag Ban – Our goal is to pass a city wide ordinance in Racine, Wisconsin for 10 cents on all paper bags and eliminating the use of single use plastic bags. Passing an ordinance regulating the use of plastic bags in Racine County will be a major step in aesthetically improving our community while reducing the expense of plastic bag disposal. Furthermore, the regulation of plastic bag use would promote Wisconsin’s reputation as clean and green community.  Single-use plastic bags represent one of the greatest environmental catastrophes of our generation. Plastics take hundreds of years to break down in water and most types never truly biodegrade. As a result, marine animals often get entangled in the debris or consume plastic in mistake of food.   |  Linked here
  • Learning Service Project with Shorewood High School –  We have partnered with the Shorewood High School Watershed Wisdom class because it revolves around the concept of the Milwaukee River watershed and the ways that it affects all of our lives on a daily basis. Watershed Wisdom is an interdisciplinary course offered to sophomores and juniors at Shorewood High School. It is a unique class that spans two school years: Class begins each year at the start of second semester and doesn’t end until the first quarter of the following school year.  One of the major parts of the course is for the students to become involved in a service project that benefits the watershed and the community in some way. One of the groups for this class is doing their Urban Watershed project in partnership with the Wisconsin Surfrider Foundation by creating and installing rain barrels for Shorewood residents.  The learning service project will help Wisconsin Surfrider Foundation initiate the Lake-Friendly Gardens Rain Barrel Program in Shorewood this spring and summer.  The mission of the Lake Friendly Gardens program is to restore and protect urban watersheds through education, training, and support of “CPR” landscaping guidelines: Conserving water and habitat, Permeating water into the soil, and Retaining rainwater on site. The Surfrider Foundation seeks partnerships with government, non-profit organizations, landscape professionals, businesses and schools to accomplish projects like this on a local level, so Watershed Wisdom Class is a perfect fit.

If you are interested in donating rain barrel supplies to help with our learning service project it would be greatly appreciated.  For additional information on volunteering or if you would like to be on the list for getting rain barrels installed at your home in the Milwaukee Wisconsin area please e-mail chair@wisconsin.surfrider.org

  • Paddle Out For Clean Water – Paddle outs will be organized at beach clean ups and other events promoting local surfers, stand up paddlers and lake enthusiasts to get in the water to raise awareness to water pollution in Lake Michigan.
  • T-shirt Fundraiser – Thanks to Newd Clothing Company for the fabulous new t-shirts.  We are selling Wisconsin Great Lakes Surfrider Foundation shirts for $10 each or free for new member signups.  New members please e-mail the membership confirmation to wisurfrider@gmail.com including your desired size, t-shirt color and mailing address.  T-shirts can be purchased at all events or by e-mailing wisurfrider@gmail.com (Please indicate size, color and address; shipping and handling costs are additional).  Colors: White, Oxford Grey, Orange, Light Blue, Neon Green, Neon Pink | Sizes: Small, Medium, Large, XL, XXL while supplies last
  • EOS Surf N SUP Festival – We will be part of the EOS Outdoors Surf N SUP Festival June 22nd in Sheboygan, WI.  The second annual EOS Surf N SUP Festival is part of the eight stops in the Midwest Sup Series.  The daylong event will consist of a three mile recreational race, a six mile elite race, surf contest with waves permitting, free Sup demos, meet with manufacturer reps, giveaways, food, post race ceremony and more!

‘The Midwest is a sleeping giant in the Stand Up Paddling (SUP) world. Easy access to many lakes and rivers, and a small learning curve, have enabled the fun-loving people of the Great Lakes region to join in with this growing activity. The Midwest also has its share of world class paddlers who are working hard to hone their skills, and who are willing to share their expertise with the many interested and eager newcomers. All of this has given shape to the fun, educational, and competitive Midwest SUP Racing Series.’
